What we cover
Fire, natural hazards and water damage to the building itself, at its replacement value.
Floods, avalanches, landslides, hail: very real risks in Valais, covered together with fire insurance.
Damage caused to third parties by your property: falling snow or ice, poorly maintained access, construction defects.
Rent not received while the property is being repaired after an insured loss.
Insurance for the jointly owned building, liability of the community of owners, and coordination with each co-owner's own cover.
During construction or renovation: damage to the building site and liability towards the neighbours.
Solar panels, heat pumps, glazing: costly equipment that needs to be explicitly included.
Points to watch
Assuming building insurance is automatic
In most cantons, it is compulsory and provided by a cantonal institution. Not in Valais: it is up to the owner to take out insurance with a private insurer.
An outdated insured value
Renovations, extensions, rising construction costs: a replacement value that is not kept up to date leads to underinsurance.
Forgetting project owner's liability
Major works (excavation, demolition) can damage neighbouring property. Property owner's liability does not always cover these risks.
Confusing building and contents
The building (walls, roof, fixed installations) and your furniture and belongings fall under two different policies. In condominium ownership, the two must be coordinated.

Frequently asked questions
Our experts' answers to the questions we are asked most often.
No. Unlike most cantons, Valais does not require building insurance and has no cantonal building insurance institution: owners take out cover with private insurers, and in practice banks require it before granting a mortgage. The creation of a compulsory cantonal insurance scheme is currently under consideration.
