When you leave an employer without immediately joining a new pension fund — for example when you move abroad, during a period without work or when you become self-employed — your 2nd pillar assets are transferred to a vested benefits account or policy (in French “libre passage”, in German “Freizügigkeit”). They remain invested there until they are transferred or paid out.
