Situation
You are rarely ill but have kept the CHF 300 deductible.
Consequence
You are probably paying a higher premium than necessary: a higher deductible can reduce your premium significantly.
Health insurance
Basic insurance under the Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal), deductibles, alternative models and supplementary insurance: we help you make the right choices at the right time.
Why it matters
Situation
You are rarely ill but have kept the CHF 300 deductible.
Consequence
You are probably paying a higher premium than necessary: a higher deductible can reduce your premium significantly.
Situation
You need to go into hospital for a planned operation.
Consequence
Without supplementary hospital insurance, you are treated in the general ward of a hospital in your canton, with no free choice of doctor.
Situation
You want to change supplementary insurer after a health problem.
Consequence
The new insurer can refuse you or impose reservations: never cancel your policy before you have received its acceptance.
What we cover
Compulsory for everyone living in Switzerland, with the same statutory benefits at every insurer.
In 2026, from CHF 300 to CHF 2'500 for adults: we work out the right level based on your actual healthcare costs.
Family doctor, HMO or telemedicine: lower premiums in exchange for a set first point of contact.
General, semi-private or private ward: free choice of hospital and doctor, depending on the option chosen.
Part of it is reimbursed by basic insurance (recognised doctors); the rest falls under supplementary insurance.
Not covered by basic insurance, apart from some exceptions: supplementary dental cover is best taken out early, especially for children.
Treatment and repatriation costs abroad, beyond what basic insurance covers.
Points to watch
Cancelling supplementary insurance too soon
Unlike basic insurance (KVG/LAMal), supplementary insurers, governed by the Insurance Contract Act (VVG/LCA), can refuse a client or exclude an illness. Never cancel before you have received the new insurer's written acceptance.
An incomplete health questionnaire
Leaving out information can entitle the insurer to cancel the policy and refuse benefits. We help you fill it in correctly.
Missing the 30 November deadline
To switch basic insurer on 1 January, your written cancellation must reach your health insurer by 30 November at the latest.
Choosing the wrong deductible
A high deductible only pays off if you can cover the costs should you fall ill: up to CHF 2'500, plus a 10% co-payment capped at CHF 700 a year for an adult (2026).
